We just reported on TGD that Paramount and The Weinstein Company have stopped making movie prints. This has been a long time coming, and theaters have to convert to digital or get left behind. There are, of course, directors that will continue to work on film, and Christopher Nolan is one of them.
When you make big money for the studios with the Batman movies, you can call the shots and dictate what you want, and Nolan resisted making The Dark Knight Rises in digital, even with pressure from Warner Brothers to do so. JJ Abrams will also be shooting the next Star Wars movie in celluloid, although we’re willing to bet it will be projected in digital.
Paramount just released its last movie on film, Anchorman 2, but as the vice chairman of Paramount said in a statement, “Although we anticipate the majority of the studio’s future releases to be executed in digital formats across the U.S., select exceptions will be made.” And it’s great to see that Nolan still has the power to shoot on film.
Digital is the way of the future, and there’s nothing we can do about it, but it’s great to see that in the waning days of film there’s still directors who can demand, and get, a movie made on celluloid. With the power of Batman on his side, Nolan is one of those directors, and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do with his next movie, the sci-fi epic Interstellar, which is coming on November 7.
