And you thought people were upset about Ben Affleck playing Batman. While I haven’t read the erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey, I’m glad the book is out there, because it’s helped keep the book business alive. The world of literature, just like everything else in this economy, has taken a hard hit, and Fifty Shades is one of those phenomenons like Harry Potter that has helped save the book biz from collapsing.
So when it was announced that the look awaited movie adaptation will be starring Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) and Dakota Johnson (Ben and Kate) as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, the public was not happy. In fact, the public outcry could end up making the Ben Affleck / Batman revolt look like nothing.
Variety headlined their report “Fifty Shades of Grey Fans Demand New Leads,” and the apparent favorites the fans wanted for the film were Matt Bomer (White Collar) and Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls). In the hopes of getting the film recast, a Change.org petition went up, and in less than 24 hours there were 7,000 signatures. (One fan even wrote, “No Bomer No Movie.”)
Other acceptable choices according to the Grey fanbase are Henry Cavil (Man of Steel), and Ian Somerholder (Vampire Diaries). But like the Batman Vs Superman decision, it’s highly unlikely the casting will change for this movie barring force majeure. (And BTW, the Change.com petition to dethrone Affleck as Batman has gotten over 90,000 votes, but you know Warner Brothers isn’t going to budge on this no matter what.)
