So the reboot of Judge Dredd, simply titled Dredd, didn’t do that great at the box office last year. It certainly went over well with fans, it didn’t wuss out on the violence for a softer rating, and there’s probably enough geek good will and world-wide box office to warrant a sequel. In fact, the geeks are trying to get a sequel going through the power of petition.
Being that the geeks can make things happen when they mobilize, Giant Freakin Robot tells us there’s now a petition online where the fans are trying to get a sequel to Dredd going. For more details, you can go here and add your vote. (Can’t hurt, right?)
As a big fan of Judge Dredd, I’d love to see him tackle the Dark Judges, namely Fire, Fear, Death and Mortis, which I think would make a hell of a movie. (It would also be a hell of a casting call to get the right people to embody those apparitions, although I’d bet that Andy Serkis would be on the short list to play one of them, probably Judge Death.)
And who knows? Sometimes a sequel can give a franchise the kick in the ass it needs. Look at Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. It would be great if another Dredd movie could make him a franchise character. If not, at least the reboot was a big step in the right direction, and it helped us get rid of the bad aftertaste of the Stallone version.
It would certainly take a hell of a lot of votes to make this happen, so if you want more Dredd in the future, definitely make your voice heard, and vote for more Dredd in the future.
