360 million diapers are changed everyday. Some day, every single one will have a digital story to tell. And you will be downloading them to your phone.
Seriously, there is a New York based company, Pixie Scientific that has developed a diaper that tracks urine, and they have a kind of color coded Qcode kind of thing on the front that you will be able to scan and use that data to determine more serious problems, such as kidney disease.
The company is running a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to raise $225,000. For $2,500 you get your child’s face on the diaper box, or you can go as low as $10 and get informed on the company’s “journey in developing this revolutionary product.”
According to the company itself, the money raised is going to be used for the following:
“To start up automated manufacturing: with the help of two automation vendors, we’ve designed a manufacturing line for producing a reagent panel, and also negotiated agreements with two raw materials vendors; we estimate the time to our first production run at the end of November;
To conduct our first study to monitor kids in a hospital: we have a signed agreement with University of California San Francisco Benioff Children’s Hospital to study performance of Smart Diapers for monitoring children in pediatric intensive care; we will commence limited production for this and other research collaborations;
To complete the FDA registration process: we and our clinical research organization (CRO) partner met with the FDA Office of In-Vitro Diagnostics on May 2nd to get their feedback on the registration requirements and we are now designing a study to produce data for registration; the CRO has taken multiple urine analysis products to marke and our safety testing partner is used by Colgate Palmolive and Johnson & Johnson.”
