Samsung has reportedly chosen a 1.6 GHz dual-core Intel x86 chip – rather than an ARM-based processor – to power at least one of its upcoming 10-inch Android tablets.
According to Reuters, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 (10.1) is equipped with Santa Clara’s Clover Trail+ mobile chip.
As AppleInsider’s Sam Oliver notes, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 lineup is seen as a direct competitor to Cupertino’s full-size 9.7-inch iPad, which has thus far managed to dominate the tablet market since hitting the streets back in 2010.
“Samsung’s decision to use an Intel chip for an Android device [is being] portrayed [by some] as a ‘coup’ for Intel in the report,” writes Oliver.
“Most smartphones and tablets currently sold, including Apple’s iPhone and iPad, are powered by chips based on ARM reference designs.”
Additional specs include a 10.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, a 3MP rear camera, a 1.3MP front-facing camera, 1 GB of RAM, 16GB-32GB of storage and a MicroSD card.
