It’s taken a long time for a legitimate Judge Dredd movie to come along, and we finally got one with Dredd last year.
While it wasn’t a runaway smash, it’s done very well on DVD / BluRay, and fans finally had a hardcore, R rated Dredd movie instead of the less-than-stellar rendition Stallone made back in the 90’s.
It would have been cool if Dredd had finally taken off big in the States, but perhaps he’s always destined to be a cult figure, like The Punisher, who’s also in a similar, darker vein. Still, some franchises, like Tron, do well enough that they can make another installment, and this could potentially happen with Dredd.
As Collider notes, Karl Urban, who played Dredd and Bones in the new Star Trek, told the site that he’s met Dredd screenwriter Alex Garland (who is also the writer of 28 Days Later), and a Dredd sequel is “not off the agenda. Clearly everyone has woken up to the fact that an audience has found this movie and loves it. If people want to see another installment then they should be vocal about that, because, it can happen.”
As Urban continued, “The power of fandom can resurrect projects,” and he mentioned how the fans saved Star Trek from being cancelled on NBC. And comparing this to Tron, it took nearly thirty years for that geek favorite to have a sequel, but it happened, and a third movie is currently in the works.
While we’re not sure how you can let the powers that be know that we’d love another Dredd movie, the geeks usually figure out a way, we can be very resourceful like that. So figure out a way to get the message out there, because Judge Dredd definitely got a much deserved second chance, but we’d still love to see him again in at least one more movie.
