Harrison Ford is not what you’d call an excitable guy. Actually, a lot of times when you see him in interviews, you wonder how soon he’ll nod off and fall asleep.
For the next edition of the dictionary, you should have his picture next to the definition of laconic.
Nevertheless, for a guy that hates to give interview or talk about his work, it’s quite something to see him promoting the upcoming trailer for Enders Game. Although his speech was just as dry as ever, you do get the impression he wants to get behind this film, and why not? Enders Game is one of the most anticipated sci-fi stories of the year, and the fans have been waiting for the big screen adaptation of this classic novel for nearly thirty years.
Both Ford, who plays Colonel Graff, and Asa Butterfield, who plays Ender, introduce the tiny teaser, and give thumbnail explanations of who they are. Butterfield calls Ender “an underdog who rises to become a leader, and humanity’s best hope for survival against an imminent invasion.” As Ford explains, the trailer will get its world-wide debut on May 7, “exclusively on Google and YouTube.” This will also be ten days before the trailer will play before Star Trek Into Darkness.
The footage in the little teaser trailer indeed looks very impressive, although it flies by very quickly. It shows the spacecraft of the movie, which looks impressive, there’s a moment where Ford tells young Ender, “You’ll be the finest commander we’ve ever trained,” as well as a warning from Ben Kingsley, who plays Mazer Rackham, that Ender “will be the last.” Whether you’re familiar with the novel or not, this brief flash of the movie should definitely pique your interest, just as much as it did ours.
In Enders Game, Kingsley’s face looks like he’s covered in tattooed tribal mehndi art, and he’s in two of the biggest genre films of the year, Enders and Iron Man 3 as the Mandarin. As Kingsley told Entertainment Weekly, “In the [Enders Game] script, which I think is beautifully written, what comes across is the authority and mystery” of the character. “There’s quite a lot said about him in the story before you see him – by the recruits and by his fellow officers – and that’s useful as far as preparations.”
As far as Kinglsey’s face design, “Every gesture in the tattoo carries family history, family struggles – it’s your past. I was so enthralled. He’s in quite a contained, stylized uniform but then this wonderful face tells his warrior history.”
Blockbuster season has officially launched with Iron Man 3, but even with Enders Game hitting trailers in November, it could indeed end up being one of the biggest movies of the year. The initiated will be there in droves for the film, and we feel it was also win over a lot of people unfamiliar with the story when it’s released on November 1. Again, look for the trailer’s world premiere on May 7, then you can see it play before Star Trek Into Darkness on May 17.
