Chevrolet has officially introduced its 2014 Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel, which is powered by a small two-liter turbo diesel engine capable of racking up 42 mpg on the highway.
Essentially, the engine displaces two-liters and promises 90% less nitrogen oxide production and particulate emissions than previous generation diesel engines.
The diesel-powered Cruze will be constructed in Lordstown, Ohio. Chevrolet says in addition to fuel economy, the diesel-powered car promises impressive performance, as it is capable of of hitting 60 mph from a standstill in 8.6 seconds. This provides superior acceleration than even the Volkswagen Jetta TDI, another of the few diesel-powered vehicles available in the US.
“Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel fills an important role in Chevrolet’s diverse four-cylinder lineup, and is primed to win over diesel devotees and compact car buyers with its performance, torque and fuel economy,” a Chevy rep explained.
“We leveraged engineering expertise from around the globe to develop a world-class, low-emissions engine to give U.S. and Canadian customers a car that’s both fun to drive and practical at the pump.”
Of course, the Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel isn’t the only new diesel-powered vehicle coming to the US this year. Indeed, Mazda recently announced a diesel-powered version of its new Mazda6, and also showcased three diesel-powered racecars in the Rolex 24 hours at Daytona a few weekends ago.
Chevrolet says that the diesel Cruze will carry a starting price of $25,695 including destination charge. The car will use a six-speed automatic transmission, antilock brakes, and 17-inch alloy wheels. The vehicle will also include a performance aero package, the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system, along with a two year maintenance plan for the above-mentioned price point.
