It’s been an interesting week of news for Fringe and Revolution. Both are JJ Abrams shows and fans of Fringe knew the end was nigh.
Yes, the finale of Fringe is slated to air January 18, 2013 as a two hour episode and will be the 100th episode of the series. The series still has a very devoted following, and two hours of Fringe is certainly a nice way to say goodbye.
As Abrams said: “It has been an absolute honor to have been a part of the weird and wonderful world of Fringe. I will always owe the cast and crew for pouring their hearts and souls into every dimension of this series.”
Abrams created the show with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the screenwriting team behind the Transformers films, who both started out writing for JJ on Alias and Lost. Abrams continued that creating the show with Kurtman and Orci “was a joy, but watching it evolve over the years into such an imaginative, insane and heartbreaking ride is nothing less than a thrill.”
As GiantFreakingRobot reminds us, it was “a minor miracle” that Fringe made it this far, because the ratings weren’t huge, and fans knew the end could be around the corner at any moment. (Remember that Abrams already had a new show, Alcatraz, come and go this year). Fox gave Fringe a way to go out with dignity and wrap everything up, which a lot of shows usually don’t have when the Nielsen ratings finally lower the boom.
Oddly enough, at the same time that the news hit that Fringe will be coming to an end, the news also got out that Revolution is going on a four-month hiatus – which is somewhat odd considering it’s a hit show which has really been hitting its stride lately. Still, as GiantRobot tells us, once its current run is done in November, the series will disappear until next March.
As Robot points out, the hardcore fans will certainly be back, but will casual fans return? Even though the show’s a hit, it only got an order for a partial season, which will wrap up this month. Because of the strong ratings, NBC gave Revolution a full series order, yet it won’t start up again until next year.
Although the ratings have improved each week, Revolution has garnered mixed reviews, and it should be quite interesting to see what the quality of the show will be like once it returns in March.
At least if you’re a fan, it’s only going away temporarily. As for fans of Fringe, everything has to end sooner or later, and here’s hoping the last episode will indeed cap it all off rather nicely.
