AU Optronics (AUO) has introduced a new smartphone display that allows manufacturers to insert incredibly thin bezels around mobile screens. The panel measures a cool 4.46-inches and supports 720p HD resolution.
Whereas many of the displays used in smartphones on the market today have bezels that are 3 mm thick or even more, AUO’s new display boasts significantly thinner bezels – which are only 1 mm in width.
By offering a smartphone display that has such thin bezels, device makers that integrate the new screen into their smartphones can design smaller devices without sacrificing screen space. The high-tech display uses low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) technology and is touch sensitive.
AUO says the thin bezels allow image and video content to appear larger in the frame, while the display provides higher-quality video.
In addition to the above-mentioned display, AUO recently introduced a 4.97-inch full HD resolution AHVA mobile display in mass production using LTPS process. Yet another noteworthy display is a 4.65-inch AMOLED that offers resolution of 317 ppi. AUO promises that this panel can display sharper quality text while offering refined and realistic images for video and photo.
And last, but certainly not least, AUO also has a slim and high-resolution 10-inch panel aimed at tablets using IGZO technology, with a resolution of 2560 x 1600. In the past, such a high resolution was typically limited to 30-inch computer displays. Nevertheless, the 10-inch tablet display offers 12% improved light transmittance – allowing for the thickness of the backlight to be reduced by 60%. The panel is only 1.5 mm thick, as the smaller backlight allows it to be more power efficient.
