It looks like Google is in fact planning to launch a smartphone with the same branding as its highly successful tablet.
The Nexus 7 tablet became a quick hit when it launched this summer. It was the first Android tablet in which Google had an active hand in the development process.
It showed not only that customers clamored for something that felt like an “official” Android product, but also that Google’s branding and marketing of the Nexus brand is working.
As a result, there has been speculation that a new Nexus phone would be soon to follow. Now, UK retailer Carphone Warehouse has posted a pre-order form for a device called the Nexus 4 on its website.
The device is listed as having a 4.7-inch display, a 1.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, and 2 GB of RAM. It also lists 8 GB of built-in storage capacity, with no microSD card slot.
Also listed in the device’s specifications is an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, as well as “Android 4.2” — a version of the OS that has not yet officially come out. The release date is listed as October 30, just one day after a planned Google media event in New York City.
Google has not issued a response with regard to this product listing.
