Here’s a shocker – the iPhone 5 is a bona fide hit.
In its first weekend on sale, it managed to reach 5 million units in sales.
The phone is truly just an incremental upgrade over the iPhone 4S. The lack of any sort of disruptive technology additions like NFC shows that this is mainly just an iPhone 4S with a bigger screen and LTE capabilities – both of which are features that other competitors have had for a while – and not much else.
Nevertheless, Apple fanatics lines up outside stores for hours or even days to get their hands on it.
As always happens when a new iPhone is released, the iPhone 5 has been sold out at virtually every store throughout the country.
“While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook.
Apple also noted that there are now more than 100 million devices running the latest version of its mobile operating system, iOS 6.
Last month, for the first time, the iPhone 4S was not the top-selling smartphone in the US. Samsung managedt to take that title. It’s a short-lived victory, though, as the iPhone 5 will no doubt climb to the top of the charts this month.
