I vividly remember when the Neo Geo first hit the market back in the ’90s. I wanted one of the consoles so badly I could barely stand it, but the devices were crazy expensive and I never managed to buy one the first time around.
Fortunately, a slick portable version of the Neo Geo will be available on December 6. The Neo Geo X Gold package, which we previously discussed, includes the little handheld, a device to connect it to your TV, and a large retro arcade-style joystick. The Gold package is priced at a cool $199.99, but you can also snap up the stand-alone console without any extras for $129.99 and still get your retro gaming fix.
Hardware specifications for the portable device recently surfaced, and it seems as if the device is powered by a 1 GHz processor and runs Linux as the OS. The Neo Geo X is also loaded with 128 MB of RAM and a 4.3-inch LCD with a resolution of 480 x 272. If you are familiar with the PSP, well, that is essentially the same screen resolution offered on Sony’s portable device.
Additional specs include 2 GB of integrated flash storage (expandable to 8 GB vian an SD card) along with a 2200 mAh battery promising up to six hours of gaming. The battery requires three hours to charge, presumably using the integrated USB port. As noted above, the Neo Geo X Station dock in the X Gold package can be used to connect the portable device to an external TV or monitor via an HDMI output as well as composite video outputs.
And last, but certainly not least, the console includes 20 Neo Geo pre-installed games such as: 3 Count Bout, Alpha Mission 2, Art of Fighting 2, Baseball Stars 2, Cyber Lip, Fatal Fury, Fatal Fury Special, King of the Monsters, Last Resort, League Bowling, Magician Lord, Metal Slug, Mutation Nation, Nam-1975, Puzzled, Real Bout Fatal Fury Special, Samurai Shodown 2, Super Sidekicks, The King of Fighters ’95, and World Heroes Perfect.
