Unlike the insatiable consumer crowd, Bethesda is in no hurry to see the next generation of game consoles. In an interview with UK gaming website MCV, the company’s PR and marketing VP Pete Hines said, “I don’t think the current generation of consoles are holding us back.”
He hinted at the thought that Bethesda is not working on any major titles for either the PS4 or Xbox 720, saying that at this point, “developers are trying to hit a moving technical target, because the platforms are being built. It moves and iterates along the way. And introducing something like that to games that are in development is always a bit tricky. And that is obviously an element of risk.”
Bethesda is one of very few companies left that is completely platform agnositc. That is to say, it isn’t entangled in a million side deals with Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo over exclusivity rights. “Our approach has been to put our games out on all of the platforms that will support them,” Hines said.
As for the Xbox 720 and PS4, rumors have sort of come together to suggest that the former will launch in 2013, most likely during the holiday season, and the latter will be released in 2014.
That would make sense, since the Xbox 360 launched a year before the PS3. Of course, the question now is whether Sony will always have an extra year to capture newer and better technology, essentially giving it a leg up ad infinitum.
For now, though, the focus is on the Wii U and Xbox 720. PS4 rumors are still few and far between.
