We all know secrecy is a given with Hollywood genre veteran JJ Abrams.
While it may seem silly to many of us that Hollywood is so paranoid about leaks, in a way it’s rather admirable that filmmakers want to keep the movie-going experience as pure as possible for the fans. Of course secrecy isn’t easy in this day and age, but as Abrams and Christopher Nolan have proven, you can absolutely still keep a movie under wraps if you try hard enough.
And funny enough, while reporting on whatever news there is for Star Trek II, we lost track of an interesting little fact. It still doesn’t have a title yet, or to be more accurate, a subtitle. Now word has come in via Collider that the full title of the next Star Trek film may indeed be Star Trek Into Darkness.
If you were expecting a subtitle that gave away the villain’s identity, like the Wrath of Gary Mitchell, who is allegedly the new Trek bad guy, forget it. No way the powers that be would let that slip. Collider also brought up an interesting point in that the title is “colonless,” if this is indeed the official title.
It’s also odd to note that as Chris Pine recently told Total Film, the next Trek won’t follow the Nolan Batman formula of “like the original, only darker. We’re not making Batman. That’s not our deal.”
At the same time, he also added, “There’s comedy, which I think JJ does a great job of, but, like the first one, there’s some serious issues being dealt with. And I’d say the threat is even greater in this one. The force [the Enterprise crew] are met with is much more frightening.”
Yet another little fact that may not be a coincidence, the same day this news got out also marks the 46th anniversary of Star Trek on September 8. You’ve probably seen the Google doodles that were put up in celebration of the legendary sci-fi series that’s still going strong.
It’s really quite remarkable that Trek has been with us this long, and will continue to be, probably for the rest of our lives, but it’s got such a strong army of Trekkies behind it that will keep carrying the torch – perhaps forever.
