Reports recently hit the web that Ben Affleck was up to direct the big screen version of Justice League.
Because of the staggerings success of The Avengers, all the major studios are trying to form their own superhero teams, and where Justice League was once on the bench at Warners, now it’s back up and running.
Now who knows if Affleck was ever really seriously considered to direct this or not, a lot of Hollywood stories that hit the web get blown way out of proportion, and just as fast as this rumor hit the web, Affleck’s peeps just as quickly denied it. Now Affleck has officially nixed the story, via Collider and 24 Hours Vancouver.
“I’m not working on Justice League,” he said. “One of the problems with entertainment web sites is that they need to fill pages, and that’s how rumors get started… Justice League sounds really exciting, but it’s not something I’m working on.”
Then there were fans chiming in on the ‘Net about who they would love to see direct the film. The top choice? The Wachowskis. Again, just because the fans want it and a vote has been set up on the ‘Net does not mean this will ultimately come to pass. They’re definitely an interesting choice, and the site Moviehole claims the Wachowskis are “under consideration,” but again, so are a number of directors.
However, I’m quite sure once things solidify for Justice League every A-list helmer will be called in for talks. As you may recall, there was also a rumor Christopher Nolan was up for it, but save for producing Man of Steel, he’s pretty much out of the superhero business with the last Batman film.
Speaking of Batman, another rumor hit Collider that Batman could be rebooted in Justice League. Without giving away the ending if you haven’t seen The Dark Knight Rises yet, things end on an ambiguous note where things can definitely get rebooted again.
The rumor apparently originated from Batman On Film, which speculates that the new caped crusader could make his debut in Justice League before starring in his own stand alone film. And yes, Justice League could also be another vehicle to reboot Green Lantern.
Bullshit, speculation, or kernels of truth? Well, your guess is as good as mine. Clearly, we’ll have to wait some time before it’s clear whether any of this comes to pass or not, but Collider also reports Justice League is supposed to be the next big DC flick after Man of Steel comes out June 14, 2013, and could even hit theaters by 2015.
