Jennifer Lawrence – aka Katniss of The Hunger Games – is starring in a new horror flick, House at the End of the Street.
Right now, Lawrence has to be the hottest young actress in Hollywood, and the world’s beating down her door for a lot of hot roles.
House at the End of the Street is already finished, and it plays on the old conceit of a house in the neighborhood where something terrible happened, when Lawrence and her mother, played by Elisabeth Shue, move in next door.
It’s rated PG-13, and the ads and trailer prominently feature Lawrence, obviously hoping to capitalize on her Hunger Games fame. It’s also interesting to note the film was directed by Jonathan Mostow, who gave us the terrific thriller Breakdown, as well as the submarine action flick U-571, and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.
This offers some hope that House at the End of the Street could potentially be somewhat of a tolerable film, although of course it’s hard to tell from the trailer.
Watching the coming attraction, it looks like there’s some of the Ring with a girl’s hair covering a ghost girl’s face, and a lot of scenes with Lawrence running around dirty and frantic in a tank top. The trailer also shows the title is apparently an acronym, spelling out HATES.
Another interesting development in horror is the UK-based Hammer Studios, which, thanks thanks to Daniel Radcliffe (of Harry Potter fame) starring in The Woman in Black, is definitely back and looking for more. As you may recall, Hammer had its heyday way back in the late fifties and sixties with such films as The Horror of Dracula, The Curse of Frankenstein, and many more.
Now the studio has another movie lined up, The Quiet Ones, a title I like a lot because a lot of people that are crazy and insane can be extremely silent, sort of like the Rodney Dangerfield joke about the guy who kills his whole family, and the neighbors tell the police, “He was a quiet man…very quiet man…”
As Collider tells us, Jared Harris from Mad Men and Spielberg’s upcoming Lincoln biopic will star, and the film is about a doctor, who “uses controversial methods and leads his best students off the grid to take part in a dangerous experiment: to create a poltergeist from negative human energy.”
