Disney has released a preview trailer for its upcoming animated adventure serial TRON: Uprising.
This preview is the first time we’ve had a chance to see what the characters in the show will look like, as past teasers have only shown citiscapes or vehicles.
The story of Uprising falls between TRON and TRON: Legacy. It tells the story of Beck, a program who sees that The Grid is in need of new leadership.
When he finds the previously defeated Tron, the pair team up to bring down the nefarious General Tesler. The challenge for this show will be the same challenge of any midquel, the need to continue one story while explaining another. A difficult feat, to be sure, and a few years ago, news of this new show probably wouldn’t have struck much of a chord with me.
However, since then, we’ve seen the outstanding stories of Star Wars the Clone wars, another animated midquel series which no one really expected much from, yet which has become the most interesting part of the extended Star Wars universe. If Uprising can pull off stories half as good as Clone Wars, we’ll be in for a treat.
Seeing the cast list is no reason for disappointment either. Bruce Boxleitner is here, of course, reprising his role as the voice of Tron, but we’ve also got the likes of Elijah Wood, Paul Rubens, and Mandy Moore; A bit of each of whom we get to hear in this preview.
The official synopsis for the serial is thus:
Produced by Disney Television Animation, the series follows Beck, a young program who becomes the unlikely leader of a revolution inside the computer world of The Grid. His mission is to free his home and friends from the reign of the villainous Clu and his henchman General Tesler. Beck will be trained by Tron – the greatest warrior the Grid has ever known. Tron will not only teach Beck the fighting skills he needs to challenge this brutal military occupation, but will be a guide and mentor to him as he grows beyond his youthful, impulsive nature into a courageous, powerful leader. Destined to become the new protector of the system, Beck adopts Tron’s persona and becomes the archenemy of Tesler and his oppressive forces.
TRON: Uprising premieres June 2012 on Disney XD.
