Warner Bros. has picked up the adaptation rights for Bolivar, an upcoming graphic novel from Archaia Entertainment.
The graphic novel – written and illustrated by Sean Rubin – tells the story of a young girl named Sybil who moves to New York and discovers her neighbor is Bolivar, the last living dinosaur.
The mysterious dinosaur is somewhat understandably considered a recluse by his neighbors. After all, he is an extremely large reptile who lives in NYC, probably in a very coveted rent-controlled apartment.
Personally, I’m thinking of a Woody Allen theme here with one slight species adjustment; namely, a neurotic misanthrope who just happens to be a dinosaur, rather than a human.
Living in a place like NYC is obviously somewhat difficult for the cold-blooded Bolivar, although years ago, he probably wouldn’t have even stood out, especially if he hung around St. Mark’s place in the village and dyed his scales green or pink.
Hell, he might have even ended up in a punk band playing at CBGB’s, perhaps opening for the Ramones or howling alongside Patti Smith. But New York City has changed over the years, and really, not necessarily for the better. Perhaps that is why despite Sybil’s persistent efforts, Bolivar initially refuses to befriend her.
Bolivar will be an animated feature, directed by Irish filmmaker Kealan O’Rourke, who is slated to both write and direct the project. Akiva Goldsman and Kerry Foster are expected to produce via their Weed Road banner, while Archaia editor-in-chief Stephen Christy will also produce.
The graphic novel is due to hit comic book stands in May 2013.
