LG is trying to turn the Optimus brand into what the Galaxy brand is for Samsung and the Droid brand is for Verizon.
The manufacturer has introduced the latest entry in the emerging mobile brand, called the Optimus 4X HD. The phone will have a massive 4.7-inch display, in a market where smartphone screen sizes are continuing to get bigger and bigger.
But the display isn’t the only thing that’s big. The 4X HD will also have a quad-core Tegra 3 processor, the first of its kind for LG. It will have a massive amount of processing power, handled by 1 GB of RAM and a speed of 1.5 GHz.
The battery is also massive, measuring in at 2,150mAh. In other words, it’s going to be LG’s most powerful phone ever. The company has not really managed to make a name for itself in the smartphone world (at least not in the way companies like Motorola and HTC have), and this device is a push to get a bit more recognition.
The Optimus 4X HD also comes with 16 GB of onboard storage, along with an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front camera. The phone is set to go on display at next week’s Mobile World Congress in Spain.
The other big news is that the 4X HD will be powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, making its first appearance on an LG phone.
The Mobile World Congress event used to operate in relative obscruity, until mobile gadgets became the hottest thing in consumer tech. Now it’s one of the most anticipated events of the year. Expect a lot of news to happen next week.
