When the video game market was making more money than feature films, one couldn’t help but wonder when the big video game-Hollywood crossover was going to happen.
Ultimately, however, the games didn’t translate well to the big screen. This can partly be attributed to the fact that audiences don’t have the same interaction with movies as with games where they are actually guiding the narrative. Plus, games can go on for hours and hours – immersing players in a detailed fantasy world – where a movie only has two or so hours to bring audiences in.
Tron is still the best movie that takes place in the video game world, and now that it’s headed to TV for Tron: Uprising, maybe there can finally be the big gaming crossover, but with television instead of theatrical features.
Many great Hollywood talents like Michael Mann have been fleeing to TV and cable because there’s more freedom, and more time over the length of a series to tell a longer, more in depth story.
As the L.A. Times reports, Tron: Uprising will be coming to Disney XD this summer, and the animated show was created by Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, who penned the big screen sequel to Tron, Tron: Legacy. (Adam and Edward also write for the show Once Upon a Time.)
Tron: Uprising stars the voice of Elijah Wood, who leads a rebellion in the Grid. This show will concentrate on the entities who live in the Grid, not the humans who get zapped into the computer like Flynn.
Tron: Uprising is also slated to star the voices of Mandy Moore and Bruce Boxleitner, who debuted in the original Tron with Jeff Bridges. The Times tells us a big focus of the show will be on the cool Tron vehicles we love, and there will also be two new fly rides, The Light Crawler and The Light Rail.
