Angelina Jolie says she is ready to take on the role of the infamous sorceress in Maleficent, Disney’s adaption of the classic Sleeping Beauty fairy tale.
“I haven’t acted in two years, and I haven’t done anything else since this [Land of Blood and Honey]. The next thing I am looking at is a Disney movie,” the actress recently told The Hollywood Reporter in Berlin.
And the sultry Jolie will probably get her wish, as THR also tells us that Maleficent has gained momentum in recent weeks, with director Robert Stromberg now on board to helm the film.
Stromberg has plenty of experience in the realm of sci-fi/fantasy projects, having worked as the production designer on Avatar, Alice in Wonderland and Disney’s upcoming Oz the Great and Powerful. Tim Burton was previously tapped to direct, as was David Yates, but it seems like the film will be moving full speed ahead under the capable guidance of Stromberg.
Jolie has apparently been interested in playing the infamous sorceress in the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale for quite some time now. In December, Angelina told THR her children really wanted her to make the movie, and were already teasingly referring to her as “Mom-Elicent.”
Jolie also said she loves screenwriter Linda Woolverton’s revisionist adaption of the classic fairy tale, as it manages to illustrate the complex relationship between Maleficent and Sleeping Beauty.
Woolverton is best known for penning two big Disney screenplays – Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King – along with Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.
