A picture of what will likely be Samsung’s most important phone at this month’s Mobile World Congress has been released to the wild.
Not by Samsung, but by someone claiming to have access to the company’s press materials for the MWC, which is held in Barcelona, Spain and has become an increasingly important event for the mobile industry.
Specifically, a Russian blogger named Eldar Murtazin found the photo, which doesn’t look like anything extremely special. It’s what’s under the hood that will make the difference, though.
The Galaxy S II Plus was first leaked when eagle-eyed readers noticed that it appears to have been entered into a benchmarking app’s database by Samsung. If true, this would be taking a page out of Apple’s playbook, as the company has a growing history of releasing incremental phone upgrades before actually raising the number (e.g., before the iPhone 4 there was the iPhone 3GS and before the iPhone 5 there was the iPhone 4S).
According to the app, the S II Plus has a CPU speed of 1.5 GHz and is powered by Android 2.3.4, the latest version of Gingerbread. Perhaps this device will be shown at the Mobile World Congress later this month.
The “Galaxy S” moniker from Samsung has come to represent the finest that the company has to offer in the mobile space. The Galaxy S II gained nearly universal praise and is leading many to question what could be next.
If Samsung keeps a hole on the Galaxy S II name for a bit longer, it could pay off.
