While there is still a lot of uncertainty about the future of Google TV as it stands now, Lenovo is ready to jump outside the box.
The company has become the first to announce an 3D TV set powered by the latest version of Android, version 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich. The product will be on display this week at the Consumer Electronics Show is Las Vegas.
More than 100 apps will come pre-loaded on the TV, a far cry from the pathetic smattering of apps that come packaged with the Sony Internet TV, the only TV set on the market powered by Google right now.
The Lenovo TV has specs that just a couple years ago, no one would have ever thought of being associated with a TV – including 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of storage, and a built-in front-facing camera.
This 42-inch set is what Google TV was supposed to be from the outset – all the amazing features you expect from an Android phone incorporated into a TV that is still an awesome TV in its own right.
For Sony, the Internet TV line is not 3D-enabled, the cost is far beyond what a normal Internet-connected TV should cost, and many Android apps that smartphone owners have come to know and love are not compatible.
Since Google TV was first announced in 2009, consumers have been complaining about how poorly Google has managed to live up to its expectations. This year’s CES, though, is the last chance for the search giant to prove it can still be a competitor in the living room space. The Lenovo TV just might do that.
