It is to be expected when you have the fastest-selling video game of all time: lots of people are cheating.
The latest Call of Duty title, Modern Warfare 3, has not only shattered sales records, it has also set new milestones for online play. Millions of gamers are swarming the servers at Xbox Live and the Playstation Network.
And with that many people, no matter how many safeguards you put in place, there are bound to be some security leaks that get exploited. In fact, well over a thousand players have already been caught in the act.
Developer Infinity Ward posted a Twitter message condemning cheaters, saying, “Any attempt to cheat, hack, or glitch in [Modern Warfare 3] will not be tolerated.”
The message also noted that “1600+ bans” have already been issued, and encouraged players to “please [continue] to report offenders.”
It would be quite a stretch to say that cheating is rampant on the game servers. But even one cheater can ruin the experience for dozens of players at a time. It is Infinity Ward’s job to assure players that not only will every cheater get caught and banned, but also that any exploits they used will be investigated and patched.
Infinity Ward has said that a “hot fix” is already in the works to take care of the security glitches and loopholes.
Nevertheless, that 1600 number is sure to rise over the coming weeks and months, but eventually the number of exploitable bugs in the game will be reduced to near zero.
