Syfy will be filming another season of Alphas, with 13 episodes slated to air over the summer in 2012.
Alphas debuted this year to the highest series premier ratings in Syfy history, and has maintained its high standing with audiences, joining Syfy’s other successful series, Warehouse 13 and Eureka, on Monday evenings.
The show approaches the idea of the super hero team from a new direction, crossing the concept with conspiracy shows, like X-Files, and misfit gang stories, like Leverage. The heroes’ powers are interesting, and they have real, compelling characters, making the success of the show nothing of a mystery.
The show was created by Zack Penn (X-Men: Last Stand screenwriter) and Micheal Karnow (writer of various episodes of various genre shows). It stars David Strathairn, Malik Yoba, Warren Christie, Laura Mennell, Ryan Cartwright and Azita Ghanizada.
“Alphas‘ smart, innovative approach to a superhero franchise has clearly caught on with our audience,” said Mark Stern, Syfy’s president of original content.
“From the first-rate writing to the outstanding cast lead by David Strathairn, we’re very proud of what was achieved in its first season and look forward to seeing this series fulfill even more of its creative potential in a second season.”
Of course, the first season’s not quite over yet, as episode 9 of 12 airs this Monday, September 12 on Syfy, along with new episodes of its sister shows, after missing a new episode on Labor Day.
