Amazon is apparently set to launch a new program aimed at people who don’t have a way to accept their packages on a normal business day.
They’ve been called “delivery lockers” or “pick-up lockers,” but Amazon hasn’t given them an official name. As a matter of fact, Amazon hasn’t said a single word about it.
But something is definitely brewing, because pictures have surfaced of a giant kiosk filled with post-office-box-esque compartments at a 7-Eleven in Seattle.
According to employees at the convenience store, the kiosk – which has a keypad and monitor in the middle but no branding on the console itself – will be operated by the behemoth online retailer.
When it goes live, Amazon customers will be able to select the kiosk as their delivery location instead of their home or office. Then, when the package arrives, they’ll receive a code that will unlock the box containing their package.
Since most 7-Eleven stores are open 24 hours, it seems like a great partner for this endeavor.
It’s unclear at this point if the Seattle location is the only one set up so far. The city does play home to Amazon’s headquarters so it makes sense as a test market. The plan is reportedly to roll out these kiosks around the country by the summer of next year.
