Chicago (IL) – You can save power on almost everything. Things you never thought of, but marketing departments think you need to know about, especially in these days. Alcatel-Lucent now tells us that it has launched the world’s first green DSL.
The company said that its new digital subscriber line (DSL) platform is “very innovative”, “high capacity” and “eco-efficient”. We cannot quite tell you how efficient it is, but at least according to Alcatel-Lucent, the line cards will consume up to 25% less power compared to conventional DSL solutions while leveraging service providers to keep their installed copper base. There was no information how many watts these cards will actually save.
What we are told, though, is that the ADSL modems will switch into low-power mode when not in use. When traffic levels decline, the modem lowers its bit rate and cuts its power consumption.
“Today, standards exist that allow modems to go in a low-power mode when user traffic is low. However, re-activating these modems causes power fluctuations – resulting in crosstalk and destabilizing the network,” said Jürgen Lison, Vice-President of Alcatel-Lucent’s (Intelligent Services Access Manager) ISAM product unit.
“Alcatel-Lucent’s green DSL provides operators with a unique, end-to-end solution that overcomes these issues – enabling a significant reduction of the modems’ power consumption across a service provider’s subscriber base without causing any line stability issues.”
The latest ISAM is also claimed to be the first commercially-available DSL platform for ETSI markets that delivers a bandwidth of 50 Mb/s to all users, with peaks up to 100 Mb/s.
