Is this the cheapest solar light bulb in the world?

Nokero has made a bit of a name for itself in marketing and selling environmentally friendly solar-based technologies such as solar lights and solar battery chargers. It is now introducing what it says is the most affordable solar light bulb in the world, and it is aimed at emerging markets.

The N180-Start, said Nokero, prices for $6 for a single bulb. It focuses upon off grid lighting needs, particularly in parts of the world which still make use of kerosene for lighting fuel. Fires and health concerns are unfortunately too common with this fuel source, with more than 1 million people per year said to be killed by kerosene fires alone.

Technical specifications of this solar light bulb indicate it will provide up to four hours of light after a full recharge in the sun at a brightness of 5 lumens. It hangs outdoors for charging, and its rechargeable battery should last up to two years under most conditions. It reportedly pays for itself in as little as 15 days.

Launched alongside the N180-Start was a higher end offering known as the N222. More aimed at those with some money to spend, it prices around $45. Features include dual solar/AC charging, a USB port for mobile phone charging, integrated hanging clip, interchangeable lens system and a base stand. Both are available now.
