Apparently judges aren’t too happy when jurors update their Facebook status to say, “gonna be fun to tell the defendant they’re guilty.”
That’s exactly what happened in the middle of deliberations in a Detroit-area court case. 20-year-old juror Hadley Jons was in the jury pool, in deliberations that lasted more than one day.
During a day in between deliberations, he reportedly posted the above message as his Facebook status: “gonna be fun to tell the defendant they’re guilty”
Defense attorney Saleema Sheikh happened to come across the status update from her son. Somehow the intrepid little guy came across the juror’s Facebook page and saw the status. Upon hearing this the judge, Diane Druzinski, immediately pulled Jons from the jury.
But it doesn’t end there. Now Jons finds himself on the other side of the courtroom, as a defendant himself. He has been charged with contempt of court. It seems to be an open-and-shut case. I wonder how many of the jurors in his case will delight in telling him he’s guilty…
So take this as a fair warning, everyone. Next time you want to incriminate yourself with a Facebook status update, at least make sure you have a private profile.
