Microsoft: No Office for Apple’s iPad

The “he said, she said” game is running rampant in the tech world today. Granted, this time around it seems more like The Daily versus Microsoft.

Yesterday, The Daily claimed it had been shown an early demo of Microsoft Office for the iPad, and reported the suite would be hitting Apple’s App Store in just a few weeks.

Of course, It didn’t take long for Microsoft to rouse itself and deny the news, saying The Daily report was little more than speculation.

According to ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley, Redmond  went on to claim that even the purported screen shots were fake.

This prompted The Daily’s Peter Ha to take to Twitter and call Microsoft out over its denial.

“@maryjofoley we did not fabricate either image,” he wrote.

“A working version of the app was demoed to us by someone at Microsoft… This image also ran with the story… Want to dispute this one too, @Microsoft?”

Of course, in the end, it all comes down to who you want to believe and why.

Personally, I’ve no doubt that an Office app on the iPad would be hugely popular. I also have little doubt that Microsoft and its employees would be perfectly happy denying the existence of something until the second before it launched.

Who do you believe, and could Microsoft’s denial have something to do with the long-awaited launch of Windows 8 for tablets?
