Report: Nvidia’s Kal-El to power Asus Eee Transformer 2

Nvidia’s third-gen Tegra chip – aka Kal-El – has reportedly been tapped to power the Asus Eee Pad Transformer 2.

Although little else is known about the tablet, the device is expected to launch sometime in October 2011.

According to Fuad Abazovic of Fudzilla, the Transformer 2 will be the first Kal-El tablet on the market.

However, it should be noted that Nvidia says it has already clinched at least five device wins for its Tegra 3 SoC.

Kal-El was originally supposed to hit the streets sometime this month. Obviously, its release has been delayed and industry sources have pegged late October as the new debut date.

The quad-core chip runs at 1.5GHz and offers a 5x performance increase over its predecessor, the Tegra 2.

The new SoC also boasts improved battery life, along with anti-aliasing support.

“This is a huge step forward for Nvidia and [Nvidia CEO] Jen Hsun Huang said there are many companies who are currently working on Kal El designs,”  Abazovic explained.

“There will be many tablets and at later date, most likely in Q1 2012, we will see phones based on quad core Kal El. [Based on] Nvidia’s Tegra roadmap, Kal El should have better computational power than Core 2 Duo.”
