R2-D2 Droid arrives in carbonite on the 30th

W00t! Star Wars fans, the wait is almost! So put away those green light-sabers, stop watching those dancing Cantina girls and tell the prissy C-3PO to quiet down.

That’s right – Motorola’s iconic R2-D2 Droid will be arriving in Verizon stores on September 30th.

The Droid smartphone, which is packaged in a custom box designed to resemble a frozen slab of carbonite, comes with a fully-functioning Star Wars media dock and wired stereo headset.

The long-awaited device is also pre-loaded with tons of cool Star Wars content, including:

  • R2-D2 notification sounds and ringtones.

  • Four live wallpapers.
  • R2-D2 Clock Widget.
  • “The Best of R2-D2” video with the original Cantina music.
  • Exclusive Binoculars App.

The R2-D2 Droid will be available for $249 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement.

It should also be noted that Verizon is preparing to launch a $3 Star Wars Mobile app for all customers with Android 2.1 (+) phones.

The app will allow Jedi Masters to browse, preview and download content related to Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.

Content is expected to include:

  • Bounty Hunt Visual ID.
  • Sound and photo gallery.
  • Live Wallpapers: Blast the Probe Droid, Luke Balancing Yoda, Navigating the Asteroid Field, Bespin’s Cloud City.
  • Trivia Challenge.
  • Widgets.
