Marvell has introduced a souped-up, tri-core SoC for next-gen smartphones and tablets.
The ARMADA 628 features two symmetric (1.5 GHz) multiprocessing cores, along with a third, ultra-low power (624 MHz) core designed to dynamically scale for both power and performance.
“This architecture is analogous to a hybrid muscle car, [as] the ARMADA 628 performs like a race car engine on demand – while still delivering the frugal gas-mileage of a hybrid automobile,” explained Marvell VP Weili Dai.
“Or, in real world terms, this [design] enables the [processor] to play more than 10 hours of full 1080p HD video or 140 hours of music on a single charge, while still providing 3 GHz of raw computational horsepower.”
The SoC also boasts six, separate processing engines that support 3D graphics at 200 million triangles per second, 1080p video encode/decode, ultra high fidelity audio, advanced cryptography, digital photo data processing and USB 3.0 connectivity.
As expected, the ARMADA 628 is fully compatible with DirectX, Open GL ES 2.0 and Open VG 1.1 – as well as RIM OS, Android, Linux, Windows Mobile and Adobe Flash.
