Video: ARM-powered ‘bot solves Rubik’s Cube in just 15 seconds

This souped-up, ARM-powered Lego ‘bot is capable of solving a daunting Rubik’s Cube puzzle in just 15 seconds.

“Over the last couple of years I’ve constructed a number of robots out of LEGOs and controlled by smartphones that can solve various Rubik’s Cube puzzles,” explained ARM engineer David Gilday.

“[But] until recently, the fastest of these was the ARM Powered Android LEGO Speedcuber using a DROID by Motorola smartphone which solves a 3x3x3 Rubik’s Cube in around 24 seconds.”

According to Gilday, the latest ‘bot is driven by an advanced algorithm running on an HTC Nexus One, with a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and 0.5GB RAM.

“The high performance solve algorithm is implemented in C++ rather than Java and compiled to run natively on the ARM processor using the Android NDK.

“As a result of being able to use this algorithm effectively on this smartphone to find shorter solutions, Speedcuber now regularly solves the Rubik’s Cube puzzle in less than 15 seconds,” he added.
