Corning’s stalwart Gorilla Glass has been used to cover sensitive LCD smartphone and tablet displays for quite some time now.
Unsurprisingly, Corning will be making an appearance at CES 2013 this week where it is slated to shocase an upgraded version of its classic Gorilla Glass.
The latest iteration is dubbed Gorilla Glass 3. According to Corning, the product has been significantly strengthened – at the molecular level. Meaning, the new glass is capable of slowing the spread of cracks even more than its predecessor, making scratches less visible.
Corning refers to this ability as Native Damage Resistance, which promises to make the glass three times more resistant to scratches and 40% less likely to show scratches. Once a sheet of Gorilla Glass 3 becomes damaged, it is also supposed to retain at least 50% more strength than its predecessor.
It’s also nice to see improved damage resistance because no one likes having to look at a scratched screen until they can afford to buy a new device.
Once CES kicks off next week, we’re sure to hear more details about the glass and see some videos of the glass being tested, as Corning has promised demos on the show floor.
