Cupertino (CA) – Apple is now offering its XServe products with Intel’s Xeon 5500 processors, formerly code-named Nehalem. Apple claims that the updated XServe provides almost twice the performance per watt of the previous models.
The new 1U blade servers are available with Xeon E5520 (2.26 GHz), X5550 (2.66 GHz) and X5570 (2.93 GHz) CPUs, which are 89% faster than the preceding XServe systems, according to Apple. The models also received some other upgrade options, including a 128 GB SSD boot rive as well as up to 3 TB of hard disk storage.
Prices start at $3000 for a unit with one 2.26 GHz CPU and 3 GB of memory. A dual CPU system will cost at least $3600, with the 2.93 GHz upgrade ringing in at another $2600. A fully equipped system with 24 GB of memory, RAID card, a 128 GB SSD and fiber channel cards tops out at just under $15,000. All Xserve units include an unlimited client license for Mac OS X Server 10.5 Leopard.
