CompuLab and Linux Mint are jointly prepping a new line of mini desktop computers designed to run a minty flavor of the popular operating system.
This isn’t the first time the duo has worked together, as the two companies teamed up last year to launch a line of MintBox devices with AMD silicon.
However, the latest additions to the MintBox lineup will boasts faster chips, more storage and an extended warranty (5 years). Oh, and yes, they will powered by an Intel i5 processor. All told, the new MintBox 2 should weigh in at a cool $600.
As Liliputing’s Brad Linder notes, this means the newer models will offer approximately 4x the performance of last year’s best model.
Additional key specs include 4GB of RAM, a 500GB HD and dual Gigabit Ethernet ports. Unfortunately, we don’t know if the Intel silicon is Haswell or an earlier SoC. Nevertheless, I think we can all look forward to a Linux system that has been professionally tried and tested on both a hardware and software level before it ships.
For the uninitiated, Linux Mint first went live in 2006 and is based on Debian and Ubuntu. It is now the 4th most widely used home operating system behind Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS and Canonical’s Ubuntu.
