Apple senior vice president of worldwide product marketing Paul Schiller has just sent out a message on Twtitter, saying a white version of the iPhone 4 will in fact be available this spring.
Or, for those of you keeping track, about one year later than the company originally promised.
The white iPhone 4 became something of a punchline after Apple continuously delayed its availability. It was originally slated to be released near the launch of the regular, black iPhone 4. Apple sent out press releases saying it would be delayed and then finally put it on an indefinite hold.
It seemed like the company just plain gave up on it, but Schiller’s tweet shows that isn’t the case.
The message, posted over the weekend, reads “the white iPhone will be available this spring (and it is a beauty!)”
The idea of making a product announcement over Twitter seems completely foreign to Apple, as the company’s showboating press conferences are usually where most of the hype comes from. But perhaps Apple is a bit embarrassed by how much of a delay the white iPhone 4 has had that it wants to make this annoncement a bit more quietly.
Of course, given how often the company has been releasing new products, it does seem kind of odd to be releasing a new version of the iPhone 4 now, when the iPhone 5 is surely on the way soon.
Nevertheless, it’s good news for those who never upgraded to the iPhone 4 because they really wanted a change of color of their new device. Let’s just hope this one doesn’t get delayed as well…
