Android gains ground in smartphone war

Google’s wildly popular mobile Android operating system continues to gain ground and now claims 41.8% of the smartphone market.


According to ComScore, Apple weighed in at second place with 27%, as RIM ranked third at 21.7%, followed by Microsoft (5.7%) and Symbian (1.9%).


Meanwhile, device manufacturer Samsung ranked as the top OEM with 25.5% of U.S. mobile subscribers, followed by LG with a 20.9% share and Motorola with 14.1%. 



Apple strengthened its position at #4 with 9.5%, as RIM rounded out the top five with 7.6%.

Other notable highlights of ComScore’s latest report include:


  • 70% of U.S. mobile subscribers send or receive text messages on their devices. 

  • Browsers are used by 41.1%.
  • 
Downloaded applications are run by 40.6%.
  • Accessing of social networking sites or blogs increased by 2.1 percentage points to 30.1%.
  • 27.8% of the mobile audience played games, while 20.3% listened to music on their phones.
