As we’ve reported before on TGD, there have been a number of geek auctions in the last several years, and for the geek who has big bucks, some incredible stuff has been sold. Several items that come to mind are the original 65mm camera that shot Star Wars, which went for a good six figures, and one of the original Batmobiles, which went for millions.
Now you can own an original piece of Wolverine art on auction, and it’s from his very first appearance. Apparently I’m not as up on my Marvel history as I should be, because I was surprised to learn that Wolverine first appeared in issue #180 of The Incredible Hulk.
Wolverine appeared on the last page of this issue, and that original hand drawn and inked page is going to be auctioned off by Heritage Auctions later this year. (The page was illustrated by Herb Trimpe and Jack Abel.)
As the Hollywood Reporter tells us, this piece of original art was held by a private owner for over thirty years, and now one lucky geek willing to step up with some big bucks will soon be the owner. A spokesperson for Heritage calls it, “indisputably one of the most significant pieces of original comic art to ever surface.”
While there’s currently no speculation about how much this art could go for, the current records are an illustration from Todd McFarlane from Amazing Spider-Man #328, which sold for $675,250, and then the cover of The Dark Knight Returns, created by Frank Miller, which sold for $478,000.
