Acer is reportedly prepping a new 7-inch Android tablet that will carry an uber-low price tag of $99.
According to documents obtained by Phone Arena, the budget tablet’s specs are certainly respectable enough, boasting a 1024 x 600 pixel display and a dual-core 1.2 GHz Mediatek processor paired with PowerVR SGX 531 graphics.
Additional specs? 512MB of RAM, and 8GB of storage as well as Bluetooth, GPS, WiFi and a microSD card slot.
Benchmark results indicate the device is running Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, although the operating system is likely to be upgraded before hitting the streets.
As Liliputing’s Brad Linder notes, Acer recently launched a budget tablet with similar specs dubbed the Iconia Tab A110 – although reports suggest the B1-A71 features a new design.
Meanwhile, BGR’s Raymond Wong points out that Acer will likely beat Google to the punch in terms of being first to the market with a tablet sporting an uber-low price point of $99.
Launching a $99 tablet is definitely a smart move for Acer, as it will help the company better compete against Amazon’s Kindle Fire lineup (starting at $159) and Mountain View’s Google-branded Nexus tablet (starting at $249).
