There are currently a number of tablets on the market today aimed at kids in specific age groups.
These tablets usually have flashy designs and are often ruggedized because, yes, kids tend to drop things. Recently, an interesting new tablet aimed specifically at older kids known as the Nabi XD surfaced on the ‘Net.
The tablet can be easily paired with an optional keyboard dock, combining the functionality of a notebook and a tablet PC in a single device. The screen is a 10.1-inch unit with a resolution of 1366 x 768, meaning it supports 720p HD content. The Nabi XD is powered by an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor and runs Android 4.1 as an OS.
The tablet also boasts front and rear digital cameras for video conferencing and taking photos, along with integrated NFC tech and a 10-hour battery. The tablet ships with productivity apps, and promises console quality gaming, which I, for one, find to be somewhat of a far-fetched claim.
The tablet is also designed with modified parental controls, allowing parents to control the browsing habits of their kids and a gadget-based user interface that adapts to the time of day and location. Meaning, the tablet will automatically know the difference between school (studying) and home (recreation) and display the appropriate apps and UI.
The 16 GB tablet is priced at $249 with a 32 GB version available for $349. Numerous accessories, including the Pad-folio, will be offered starting in mid-January ranging in price from $19.99-$89.99. The price of this tablet puts it right in there with some smaller screen Android offerings such as the Kindle Fire HD, so it is probably worth asking yourself if a kid-oriented tablet is something your child would actually be interested in before buying.
