If you like the design and style of the MacBook Air, but just can’t bring yourself to part with a thousand hard-earned dollars, you might want to check out this look-alike which recently tipped up at Computex.
The thin little system – dubbed the N2-A – sports a 13.3-inch screen and runs Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Unfortunately, the machine seems to be available only in bulk at this stage, at a cost of $74,500 per 500 units. This works out to about $149 per device.
The N2-A is manufactured by THD or Thread Technology Company. The screen is LED backlit and boasts a resolution of 1366 x 768. The system is powered by a 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex A8 and features 1 GB of RAM, 8GB internal storage (SSD), integrated Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity via an external card.
Additional specs include a pair of USB 2.0 ports, full-sized QWERTY keyboard, SD card slot, headphone output, microphone input, HDMI port and a 4200 mAh battery promising eight hours of use per charge.
The little FauxBook Air is suitably lightweight at about 3.4 pounds and is quite thin.
The big downside here, according to Engadget, is that since Android 4.0 is designed for touchscreens, users are forced to to resort to using a “mediocre” track pad, as the N2-A lacks a touchscreen display. Then again, there is also a virtually identical N2-C that adds a dual-core Atom processor and runs Windows 7.
Personally, I can’t help but wonder how long it will take for Apple to sic its legal ninjas on the company.
