Samsung and Android are mobile winners

A recent ComScore survey of more than 30,000 US mobile subscribers has determined that Samsung is now the top handset manufacturer with an impressive 26% market share.

Samsung was followed by LG with 19.3% share, while Apple continued to gain ground, ranking third with 14.0 percent of mobile subscribers (up 1.6 percentage points). Motorola weighed in at fourth with 12.8% and HTC with 6% percent.

Meanwhile, Google’s wildly popular Android operating system continued to increase its share in the US smartphone market, accounting for 51% of smartphone subscribers, while Apple’s share increased 1.1 percentage points to 30.7%.

Perhaps not unsurprisingly, RIM ranked third with a 12.3% share, followed by Microsoft (3.9%) and Symbian (1.4%).

ComScore also reported that 74.3% of US mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile devices, while downloaded applications were run by 50% of subscribers (up 2.4 percentage points).

Meanwhile, browsers were used by 49.3% (up 1.8 percentage points), as accessing of social networking sites or blogs increased 0.8 percentage points to 36.1% of mobile subscribers. Game-playing was confirmed by 32.6% of the mobile audience (up 1.2 percentage points), while 25.3% listened to music on their phones (up 1.5 percentage points).
