It’s the most up-to-date Android phone currently on the market but Verizon is apparently not fully satisfied with the Galaxy Nexus.
The device, which is the first – and so far only – smartphone to have Google’s Android 4.0 operating system, will be getting a software update in January.
Computerworld received an e-mail from Verizon spokesperson Brenda Raney that asserted “there is no issue with the performance of the device.”
However, she admitted there is a bit of confusion with the device and said the update “will adjust the signal strength indicator to more closely match other Verizon Wireless devices.”
Apparently, for whatever reason, the Galaxy Nexus displays a signal strength indicator that is different than most other phones.
As a result, users are seeing what appear to be weak signals when the phone might be working just fine. So one bar of service on the Galaxy Nexus might actually be like three bars of service on another phone.
But there have been some complaints about service being unavailable or dropping down to 3G data connections. It’s unclear exactly what the update is fixing.
The news comes after Google had to pull its Android 4.0 update for the Nexus S, the Galaxy Nexus’s predecessor, due to unspecified issues. The new version of Android remains a nascent platform and of course is subject to various hiccups. Every major manufacturer will begin rolling out 4.0 upgrades next year.
