How to Train your Dragon sequel begins production

Writer-director Dean DeBlois confirms the sequel to the popular CGI film recently began storyboarding.

Due to the somewhat unexpectedly massive popularity of How to Train your Dragon, plans are already in the works for the film to be the first of a trilogy. The second film is currently in the works, and has hit the first step of production, storyboarding.

Deblois seems to have a grand vision, and is putting a lot of effort into making a good run for the franchise, which is refreshing in a world full of half-shod sequels.

“There are certain characters and situations that come into play in the second film that will become much more crucial to the story by the third,” DeBlois said at the dedication for the Katzenburg Center for Animation, where he made the announcement regarding the status of the film.

“Other threads from [How to Train Your Dragon] will begin to pay themselves off in the second. It’s my way of guaranteeing that it is not another adventure that we throw the same five or six characters into, that it feels like part of a larger story.”

The new film, he said, will follow the same characters from the previous tale, including Hiccup the Viking, the heir to the leadership of a small warrior clan.

Chris Sanders, co-director of How to Train Your Dragon, will be executive producing the new film, for which a title has not yet been announced, leaving the directors chair solely to DeBlois. The film is slated to hit theaters on 20 June 2014.
