No, Frodo Baggins wasn’t mentioned in J. R. R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit.” So why is the most peculiar Hobbit (Elijah Wood) making an appearance in the long-awaited, two-part Lord of the Rings prequel?
Well, Wood told MTV that LOTR purists (er, read fanbois) needn’t worry about the film misrepresenting the original text.
“You know, it’s a very small piece, and I think that’s [really] the most appropriate [role],” he said. ”[Because] Frodo’s obviously not alive within the context of the ‘Hobbit’ piece.”
So how will Frodo be incorporated into the film?
Reports suggest that the prequel could unfold as a story being told in flashback, perhaps with a narrator reading “The Hobbit, or There and Back Again.”
Others, like MTV’s Tom DiChiara, believe Gandalf the Grey (aka Mithrandir) may choose to “unspool” the tale whilst “the entire Fellowship of the Ring sits around a campfire in the midst of their ‘LOTR’ quest to destroy the One Ring.”
Interestingly enough, Wood told MTV that the latter idea was a definite possibility.
“It’s a [concept] that Peter and Fran [Walsh] and Philippa [Boyens] – the writers – came up with.
“And the way that it’ll fit in will not at all infringe upon the integrity of ‘The Hobbit.’ So I think it’s… It’ll fit. And it’ll be appropriate. And I’m excited. It’ll be great.”
