Tim Burton has learned not to do 3D

After his last creation, Alice in Wonderland, totally ripped people off, Tim Burton will not pursue 3D with his next flick.

Burton confirmed in an interview with thewrap.com when asked if Dark Shadows would be presented in 3D, “I have no plans for that … There’s people like, ‘Everything’s gonna be in 3D,’ or ‘I hate 3D!’ I think people should have a choice. I don’t think it should be forced on anybody.”

The decision comes after Disney reportedly pressured Burton to turn Alice in Wonderland, a 2010 remake of the classic film, in 3D. Instead of using state-of-the-art 3D equipment to shoot the movie, though, he used the same traditional cameras historically used for 2D movies, and then converted everything to 3D in post-production.

The result was a totally lackluster experience that left moviegoers reeling in frustration over paying the 3D premium.

That movie, along with other 2D-to-3D conversions, caused director James Cameron to come out and slam studios and filmmakers for ruining the 3D industry. Since then, virtually no other movies have done the conversion method, which was essentially seen as a cheap way to bilk more box office money.

So for Burton, it was either invest in all new 3D cameras and changing his directing style, or simply rely exclusively on 2D for Dark Shadows. Clearly he has chosen the latter route.

The film is set to be in theaters beginning May 11, 2012.
