Sony to showcase new PSP at E3

Chicago (IL) – Sony will reportedly showcase a new version of its popular PSP at the E3 conference in June. According to 1UP.com, the upgraded device is expected to be named PSP GO!

The hand-held unit will be available in two configurations, with either eight or 16 GB of built-in flash memory. The system is set for release in Japan this September, with US distribution slated to begin in late October or early November.

1UP also claims that the redesign will “include a d-pad, analog nub, and face buttons as part of a sliding unit sticking out below the screen.” However, PSP GO! is unlikely to include a second analog stick “but instead will remain consistent with the current control configuration.” Sony may also decide to drop the unit’s UMD drive.

1UP believes that Sony is “clearly attempting to assert their relevance in the wake of the DSi’s release and success of the iPhone as a gaming platform.”

The company has thus far refused to confirm or deny the above-mentioned reports, stating only that it “does not comment on rumors or speculation.”
